GENERAL INFORMATION
The Bulgaria Conducting Workshop is an advanced workshop for conductors who want both rehearsal time and concert experience with a professional orchestra. The seminar is two weeks long and there will be two concerts. Nine "Conducting Fellows" will be accepted. The Conducting Fellows will conduct on both concerts. Five "Conducting Associates" will be accepted. The Associates will have an equal amount of conducting time as the Fellows, but they will not conduct on the concerts. Auditors and Conducting Participants for piano sessions will also be accepted. The workshop includes individual meetings, career mentoring, press packet evaluation, sessions on programming, and discussions of topics in the book "Beyond the Baton" by Diane Wittry. All conducting sessions and concerts will be video tapes and a remote microphone will be used. All participants will be considered for Conducting Fellow positions with the Allentown Symphony Orchestra, PA for the 2012-2013 season.

Conducting Time:
Conducting Fellows and Associates will have 2 hours and 10 minutes of conducting time with the orchestra! You will also have 30-45 minutes with two pianos. Conducting Fellows will conduct one movement or a shorter piece on each concerts. Pieces or movements will be assigned in advance according to your interests and experience level. The Conducting Associates will have equal rehearsal time as the Fellows. All of the Conductors will be encouraged to learn all of the repertoire.

Seminar fees are due upon acceptance into the workshop. Applications will be processed on a first come basis in the order they are received. Payment of the seminar fee is required to hold your position in the workshop. Seminar fees can be refunded up to four weeks before the first day of the seminar. If it is closer than four weeks, the fees will be refunded only if the withdrawing applicant’s place in the seminar is filled by another Participant.

The application form can be filled out on-line, or you can print it and mail with your press packet, resume, and sample conducting video. Conducting samples can also be posted on-line for viewing. A non-refundable $30 application fee must accompany all applications. No application will be processed without this fee. DEADLINE:
Applications will be processed as they are received with priority of equally qualified candidates going according to the postmark date. We anticipate that the Conducting Fellows positions will fill up quickly. The deadline for Applications will be March 30th.
SCHEDULE OF EVENTS:
The workshop has 2 concerts, 10 full orchestra rehearsals, 7 piano rehearsals, 5 discussion sessions, a sight-seeing trip, a group dinner, and a closing reception with the orchestra. For a downloadable version , click here.

The Balkan hotel is the most luxurious hotel in the city of Pleven and the region. It is a modern building with 226 rooms. This hotel is located within a 5 minute walk from the center of Pleven. Hotel rooms and suites are furnished with a telephone, radio, TV, cable, WiFi internet access, air-conditioning, and a mini-bar. Room service is available as well as laundry and dry cleaning service. There is a secure parking lot, a hairdresser, massage, a lobby bar, restaurants, and conference rooms. The menu for the restaurants includes international cuisine with great variety of food and drinks, as well as traditional Bulgarian dishes and wines. We have arranged for a special rate of approximately $32 per night. This special price also includes breakfast!
Sightseeing Trip:
There will be a special sight-seeing trip to Viliko Tarnovo, a city in north central Bulgaria. Often referred to as the "City of the Tsars," Veliko Tarnovo is located on the Yantra River and is famous as the historical capitl of the second Bulgarian Empire. Many tourist vist yearly because of its unique architecture.
TRAVEL:
All Conductors should arrange their travel so that they fly into Sofia, Bulgaria. We will then help to arrange for transportation by bus or car to the city of Pleven. This ground transportation will cost about $100 each way. If everyone arrives and we can arrange one bus, this will be less expensive. Airfare ranges from $700 - $1000 depending upon where you are coming from and how early you book your flights.

Internationally respected conductor Diane Wittry is currently the Music Director and Conductor for the Allentown Symphony, PA. She is in demand as a guest conductor nationally and internationally, and has conducted orchestras in Italy, Japan, Russia, Slovakia, Bosnia, Canada, and Ukraine. American orchestras she has worked with include: The Los Angeles Philharmonic, The Milwaukee Symphony, The San Diego Symphony, The Buffalo Philharmonic, The New Jersey Symphony, The Houston Symphony, The Florida Philharmonic, and The Ojai Festivals Chamber Orchestra, among others.
Diane Wittry is also the Artistic Director (USA) of the International Cultural Exchange Program with the Sarajevo Philharmonic in Bosnia, and the Artistic Director of Pizazz Music, a performing ensemble that brings classical music to people in new and different ways.
Over the years, Diane Wittry has received many honors and awards including feature articles in Newsweek magazine and the New York Times; an Arts Ovation Award from the City of Allentown, Pennsylvania; the Women of Excellence Award in Beaumont, Texas; the national Helen M. Thompson Award from the American Symphony Orchestra League for outstanding artistic leadership; and the prestigious Fiorino Doro Award from the City of Vinci, Italy. Her book, “Beyond the Baton” was released by Oxford University Press in January 2007 and was reprinted in the new paperback edition in 2011.

THE PLEVEN STATE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA, BULGARIA
The Pleven Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in 1953 in Pleven, Bulgaria. The city of Pleven is in Northern Bulgaria, about 160km away from the capital Sofia. It has a population of about 120,000. The repertoire of the orchestra is quite diverse and includes all musical styles from symphonic to opera music. During its 50 year history, Pleven Philharmonic Orchestra has featured many distinguished conductors and soloists from all around the world. The current conductors of the Pleven Philharmonic are Yordan Dafov and Slavey Tinchev. Pleven Philharmonic Orchestra has toured a number of European countries: Greece, Romania, Norway, France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Portugal. The orchestra performs about 60 concerts per season and two opera tours abroad.

The Pleven Theater is home to the Pleven Philharmonic where they perform over 60 concerts a year. This beautiful historic building is located in the downtown area.
