GENERAL INFORMATION

The Beyond the Baton - Conducting Workshop is a workshop that focuses on improving and expanding each conductor's technique through a variety of exercises and concepts from the book "Baton Basics." This Conducting Workshop also focuses on discussions of Artistic leadership and concepts from the book "Beyond the Baton" by Diane Wittry.

Some participants will be invited to become "Conducting Fellows" for the Allentown Symphony, (PA) for the 2017-2018 Season.

REPERTOIRE:

Tchaikovsky - Serenade for Strings
Grieg - Holberg Suite

Participants will have the opportunity of making a professional level conducting video for job applications. All conducting sessions will be video-taped with a remote microphone. Total podium time for each active participant is approximately 1 hour 40 minutes. Some sessions will be with String Quintet, some with string orchestra.

APPLICATION DEADLINE

All applications should be postmarked by May 15, 2017. Applications will be accepted after that date if there are still openings. Between 10-12 active participants will be accepted.  Some Housing Scholarships at private homes are available.

HOUSING:

The Norwalk Inn and Conference Center
Single and Double rooms are available at approximately: $109 + tax. (Reference "Beyond the Baton Conducting Workshop - with Diane Wittry " for your reservation.) The Pizazz Music office will help to coordinate between participants who are interested in sharing a room during the seminar. The Norwalk Inn has a full service restaurant and a bar, and includes Hi-speed internet and bottled water.  The Inn is located just 2 blocks from the Norwalk City Concert Hall where the sessions of the seminar will take place. TRAVEL:

The City of Norwalk, Connecticut, is located off of Interstate I-95, (Exit 16) less than one hour’s drive north of New York City. It is accessible by train from New York on the Metro North, New Haven Line. The closest station to the hotel is the East Norwalk Station. The East Norwalk train station is less than ½ from the Norwalk Concert Hall and the Norwalk Inn and Conference Center.  For people traveling by train, arrangements can be made to transport participants to and from the train station.  If you are traveling by air, the closest airport is the Westchester County Airport in White Plains, NY, but Norwalk is also assessable by La Guardia and JFK Airports.  There is a Connecticut Limousine service which can transport you directly to the Norwalk Inn.

FACULTY:  DIANE WITTRY
     – Music Director/Conductor/Author

Internationally acclaimed conductor, DIANE WITTRY, maintains a dual career as a music director and guest conductor throughout the world. Recently named as one of the "Top 30 Professional Musicians" by Musical America (Dec 2015),  Diane Wittry has conducted orchestras in 10 countries in Europe and Asia, as well as her regularly scheduled concerts with her orchestras in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

Diane Wittry is currently the Music Director and Conductor of the Allentown Symphony, PA, and the Ridgewood Symphony, NJ.  She also serves as the Artistic Director (USA) for the International Cultural Exchange Program with the Sarajevo Philharmonic (Bosnia). 

Diane Wittry, has taught International conducting courses and workshops in Bulgaria and Ukraine, as well the New York Conducting Institute, the International Conductor's Institute, the South Carolina Conductor's Institute, and the Beyond the Baton Conducting Seminars and Workshops. An avid supporter of young conductors and conductor training, Wittry is a member of the National mentoring committee of the Conductor's Guild.

An award winning author and scholar, her book, "Beyond the Baton", (Oxford University Press, 2007) was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and has become a standard, both nationally and internationally, in the field. Her most recent book "Baton Basics - Communicating Music Through Gestures" (Oxford University Press, Dec. 2014) is being utilized by conducting classes across the country.

Wittry has been a guest lecturer at the Juilliard School, the Manhattan School of Music, the Curtis Institute of Music, as well as other Universities and Colleges, and she is a frequent guest speaker at national conferences such as the League of American Orchestras and the Conductor's Guild.

Diane Wittry is also an established composer and her music is published by Theodore Presser.
